from Awareness by Anthony De Mello . . .

Most people are worried about what’s going to happen to their career, like a middle age businessman coming home from his 30-year reunion with business college classmates thinking: “Look at my classmates; they’ve really made it. One is president of a corporation; the other has become the Chief Justice; somebody else is a bestselling writer and a hot consultant. They make more money than me and they get asked to speak at conferences and some of them are even interviewed on TV and get their names in the newspaper.

Is that what we call “making it?”

Who determines what it means to be a success?

The answer is this stupid society of ours! The main preoccupation of society is to keep society sick! And the sooner we realize that, the better.

Being president of a corporation has nothing to do with being a success in life.

Having a lot of money or a big job or being famous or having a dazzling reputation has absolutely nothing to do with happiness or success.

Nothing! It is totally irrelevant.

You’re a success in life when you wake up!

Then you’re free of all the labels society puts on you.  You are free of measuring up to society’s criteria for success.

Free yourself and you don’t have to put on airs for approval or make excuses for mistakes or apologize to anyone for being yourself.

You no longer care what anybody thinks about you or what anybody says about you. You have no worries; you’re happy. That’s what I call being a success.
