Away to Approach Thanksgiving Day

Set out in search of the source of happiness.

Look closely at the life of a happy person who is poor, then talk with him, attempting to discover what makes this person happy.

Think of a joyful person in poor health, in physical pain, and talk to them, searching for what it is that makes them joyful.

Do the same with a happy person who has lost his reputation.

Then observe people who are free and wealthy and are unhappy, ungrateful, and selfish.

Reflect on this: It is inconceivable that anyone could be grateful and unhappy. The only reason we are ever unhappy is because we are focused on what we do not have, instead of what we do have.

Now thank the Lord for each event that happened yesterday, and notice the effect this has on you.

And the things you call unpleasant, undesirable — search for the good that comes from them—the seeds for growth they carry—and find reason to be grateful for them, too.

Finally see yourself moving through each portion of today in gratitude —and happiness.
